The thought of getting an MBA overseas is exhilarating, scary, adventurous, and possibly a smart career decision depending on what your intended area of business is.

If you’re interested in doing business internationally or just getting some diversified cultural experience, getting your MBA in a foreign land may be exactly the right thing to do.

Erin O’Conner has an excellent article at Jungle that covers the whole shebang about international MBAs, so you’ll want to check out.

As business becomes more and more global, so does business education. Graduate education in business administration was once a primarily American and Western European phenomenon, but programs are now springing up all over the world. And as more top U.S. schools open international campuses and partner with international firms, foreign business schools are responding to the competition by improving the quality and breadth of their programs. Today you can get an MBA just about anywhere…

Yes, you certainly do. I’ve checked this out because I have a book fetish and harbor a secret crush on many a librarian.

Upon investigating though, I found that it is not really as easy as I thought it would be. Librarians of today have more going through their pretty heads than the Dewey Decimal system. If you want to become a librarian, you need a master’s degree, and the competition is fierce!

For Library Studies programs, you can specialize in any of these areas:

Archives and Preservation

Digital Librarianship

Health Librarianship

Information Systems

Law Librarianship

School Library Media

Services for Children and Youth

Your top ranking graduate schools for Library Studies in 2008 are: University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign, University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill, and Syracuse University (NY)

Princeton professor Anthony Grafton gives some great insight into what graduate school is like and the present challenges facing those on a quest for a higher education:

If you love editing friends’ chapters and arguing about their ideas, if you find that being immured in a carrel for long days and nights with several hundred books is oddly exciting, then you have good reason to think about making another, longer dive into the scholarly deep. But don’t jump before you find out exactly what lies below.

In my last post, you heard about how I was let go by X Publishing, and am deciding on full time grad school, or finding a company to work for that will offer tuition reimbursement. There are a lot of things to consider if you are weighing these two options:

Grad School

Where would your income come from? Would you be able to swing living on financial aid and some sort of part-time job or TA position and keep up with your courses? A lot of people do it, but it’s stressful.

Where is the location of the schools you are applying for? Will you be able to get instate tuition, or will you have to work for a year to establish residency before applying? If you are like me, and already own a home, are you willing to sell or rent your place and relocate? The last question is something I have really been struggling with, both in my job search and deciding on prospective schools.

Job with Tuition Reimbursement

What are the conditions of the reimbursement? Will you have to pay out of pocket, and then the company will reimburse you once they see you have completed your classes? Are you financially prepared for expenses like that, or will you still need to take out a loan? Some companies, like X Publishing, require an employee to stay with the company for a certain number of years after graduation. Are you ready to make that kind of commitment?

Will the company you are working for allow you some sort of flexibility to attend class, or are you better off looking for an online program that will allow you to work on your own time?

These are a few of the things I will be thinking about over the weekend as I continue my job search and my research on grad programs I might apply to. Stay tuned!

So you’ve just realized you are going to finish up your long awaited College Degree and you’ve got your sites set on this amazing job. But now what? You realize the applicant field is to thick and you must above all else find a way to stand out above the crowd. The Masters Degree is the only way to do that. So in the middle of some of the busiest days of our lives we are forced to set out on The Grad School Search. The ever present ominous task of selecting the finest school to set us apart from the competition so we can go to the campus library and pick up some books, we can go speak to our advisor, or we can head out onto the internet and start researching. Personally I like the research side of things.

One site I’ve found particularly useful is called MBA Schools. With the ever looming recession there are tons of good reasons to get an MBA, they just reinforced it for me right off the bat.

“MBA graduates can look forward to rosier job prospects and higher starting salaries.”18% more MBA graduates were hired in 2006 than in 2005, and base salaries jumped to over $80,000, with total compensation packages coming in just a shade under $100,000. Most colleges offering MBA degrees report an increase from business recruiters of 10 to 30%.

I spent about an hour just this morning digging through the resources they have on this site. I personally would like to stay in California where I currently attend college at San Diego City College, but I’m going to keep my options open. I like the possibility of taking a job out in the real world while I work on my MBA online and after hours. So that’s probably the route I will go.

MBA Schools, has a lot of possibilities as far as Grad Schools that I can attend locally or via distance learning. So I sent off for information from all the schools that I thought were a good fit for my major which is Computer Information Science and now I’m just waiting for a reply back.
