The Dewey Donation System
Although this isn’t really that grad school related, I thought I’d throw it out there. A few years ago author Pamela Ribbon started the Dewey Donation System to fund needy libraries by launching an "assault" on them–getting people to donate books from their Amazon wishlists without the libraries knowing. So far, we (I only say "we" because I have donated every year) have bombarded libraries involved with Katrina, the Tsunami, wild fires, and more. But you can read all about that on the about page. Reading is so important in education, and giving people the chance to read is one of the ways to encourage them. So please help a child by donating a few books. It might make all the difference for the future, determining whether or not they will make it to grad school someday too. If you do decide to donate, please leave a comment!
Parental Accomodation Policy at University of Michigan
According to The Michigan Daily, the “the Rackham Graduate School has passed a policy granting time off to new parents.” This policy is open to men and women who are either adopting a child 6 or under, or are expecting to give birth. The students will receive six weeks off with “lightened deadlines and expectations.”
Previously, Graduate Student Instructors could lose insurance coverage if they took time off to care for a child, but because of this policy, that will no longer be the case.
